There are three honest ways to electrify a house, and the choice between them is usually decided by cash flow and by when the existing equipment dies. This article compares the approaches themselves rather than the hardware, because picking the wrong approach costs more than picking the wrong model within the right one.

The three approaches

Whole-home conversion does everything in one project: envelope work, electrical capacity, heating, hot water, cooking, sometimes charging. One design, one permit cycle, one crew mobilization.

Staged conversion follows a written multi-year plan. Capacity work happens early so later steps drop in without rework, and each stage is scheduled around equipment failure or budget rather than urgency.

Equipment-only replacement happens when something breaks. No overall plan, each decision made under time pressure.

The pattern is consistent. Planning ahead lowers total cost and raises up-front cost. Most households sit somewhere between the second and third column whether they intended to or not.

The load question runs through all three

Whichever approach you pick, the electrical capacity decision should be made once, early, and on the basis of the finished house rather than the current one. That means a load calculation that includes the equipment you intend to add later, not just what you are installing today.

Understanding what the added equipment will actually draw helps. Panel work, service upgrades and new circuits are licensed, permitted, inspected work in every case; the approach you choose changes when it happens, not who may do it.

Where ground-source changes the maths

One option deserves separate mention because it does not fit the staged model well. Ground-source systems, which the EIA describes in its explainer on geothermal heat pumps, move heat to and from the ground rather than the outdoor air. The ground loop is civil work with heavy equipment and site access requirements, which makes it much harder to add later than an air-source unit.

If ground-source is on the table at all, it pushes towards the whole-home column, because the disruptive part of the job is difficult to stage. Whether it suits a particular site depends on lot size, soil, drilling access and local contractor availability, none of which can be judged from an article.
