Building in headroom: planning for the upgrades after this one
Cheap provisions made during an electrification project that make later additions simple: spare conduit, panel spaces, stub-outs and documented capacity.
The cheapest moment to prepare for a future upgrade is while the walls are open and a crew is already on site. The most expensive moment is three years later, when the same work requires demolition, a second mobilization and a second permit. This article is a list of small provisions worth specifying now, and a short argument for why the list is short.

Provisions worth specifying
Ask the electrician and the mechanical contractor to price these as line items:
- Spare conduit runs. From the panel to the garage, to the attic, to the exterior wall where an outdoor unit might sit, and to any planned future subpanel. Empty conduit installed during a job costs a fraction of a later wall opening.
- Panel spaces held open. Specify a target number of free spaces after the current work, in writing, rather than accepting whatever remains.
- A stub-out at the future equipment location. A capped line set route or a drain path saves a very awkward retrofit later.
- Structural provision. Blocking for a future wall-mounted unit, or a pad and clearance for future outdoor equipment.
- Documented headroom. The load calculation output stating how much capacity remains, so the next contractor starts from a number rather than a survey.
The rule behind the list is that provisions should be passive and cheap. Anything that requires a working assumption about a specific future product usually turns out wrong.
Do not pre-buy the future
The temptation is to buy the hardware now while the crew is there. Resist it for anything that is not passive infrastructure. Equipment bought years before installation loses warranty term and may be superseded by something that fits better.
The Department of Energy's BuildingsNEXT program, successor to the long-running Solar Decathlon, exists partly to push exactly this kind of building technology forward through design competition and demonstration. The relevant conclusion for a homeowner is not about any specific product; it is that the product set is still moving, so buy the conduit and not the device.
Planning against long-range direction, not forecasts
If you want a sense of where the wider system is heading, EIA's Annual Energy Outlook publishes long-range projections for U.S. energy production, consumption and prices under a range of cases. It is a projection exercise rather than a prediction, and that framing is exactly why it is useful here: the honest reading is that a range of futures remains open, which argues for flexibility rather than commitment.
Concretely, flexibility means a panel with room, a route to the garage, and a documented number for remaining capacity. It does not mean guessing which technology wins.

Common questions
Is empty conduit really worth paying for? It is usually the cheapest line on the quote and the one that saves the most later. Ask for a pull string in each run.
How many spare panel spaces should I ask for? Enough for the additions in your written plan, confirmed against the load calculation. Your electrician can turn the plan into a number.
Should I upsize the service just in case? Only if the load calculation for the planned finished house supports it. Oversizing on speculation is a real cost with no guaranteed use.
Does any of this help at resale? Documented capacity and clean routes are easy for a buyer's inspector to verify, which is more than most upgrades can claim.
