A specification sheet is a legal document written by a marketing department. Everything on it is true under stated conditions, and the conditions are the part that decides whether the number means anything for your house. This article is about extracting the comparable figures and ignoring the rest.

Put everything in the same units first

Cross-category comparison fails on units more often than on substance. Heating and cooling capacity appear in British thermal units per hour, electrical draw in watts or amps, and gas equipment in therms. Once everything is in the same unit, arithmetic becomes possible. Before that, you are comparing a claim about gas with a claim about electricity and reaching whatever conclusion the manufacturer intended.

Scale the numbers against a real household

Ratings are easier to judge against a reference point. The EIA answer to how much electricity a typical American home uses gives a national figure that is useful precisely as a yardstick, not as a target. If an upgrade claims to save a quantity that is a large fraction of an entire household's annual use, the claim needs unusually good evidence.

Your own twelve months of billing data is a better yardstick still. Use the national number to spot implausible claims and your own data to size real ones.

Modeled numbers versus measured ones

Two kinds of figure appear on the same page and deserve different trust. Measured figures come from a defined test procedure that another laboratory could repeat. Modeled figures come from a calculation with assumed inputs: an assumed climate, an assumed usage pattern, an assumed price.

Annual cost and annual saving estimates are almost always modeled. That does not make them dishonest, but it does mean the assumptions matter more than the output. Ask which climate and which energy price were assumed, then substitute your own before believing the result.
