Thirteen electric home upgrades worth considering

Thirteen electric upgrade types for U.S. homes, sorted from low-risk to major work, with the electrical requirement and the trade involved noted for each.

This is a list of upgrade types, not products. We do not test equipment and will not name brands or claim one model outperforms another. What the list gives you instead is the shape of the field: thirteen things households actually do, ordered roughly from lowest commitment to highest, with the electrical implication attached to each.

What to take away

  • The first five items need no new circuit and no permit in most cases.
  • The last four are licensed, permitted work with inspection.
  • Envelope items are unglamorous and change the size of everything after them.
  • Each item is a category; model selection comes after the category is chosen.

Low commitment, no new circuit

  1. Air sealing. Caulk, weatherstripping and sealing at the attic plane. Cheapest lever in most houses.
  2. Attic insulation top-up. Follows air sealing, never precedes it.
  3. Smart thermostat. Useful mainly for scheduling and for the data it produces.
  4. LED lighting completion. Whatever is left after the easy fixtures were done years ago.
  5. Portable induction hob. A plug-in single zone unit, genuinely a way to try induction cooking before committing to a range.

Moderate: a circuit, sometimes a permit

  1. Heat pump water heater. Needs a suitable location, air volume and a condensate path. Often needs a new circuit.
  2. Ductless single-zone heat pump. Adds heating and cooling to one room or a zone the ducts never reached.
  3. Level 2 vehicle charging. A dedicated circuit; hardwired equipment is licensed electrical work.
  4. Induction range. Usually needs a dedicated circuit sized for the appliance, plus gas decommissioning if replacing gas.

Major: licensed, permitted, inspected

  1. Ducted or multi-zone heat pump replacing a furnace. The largest single change in most houses.
  2. Duct sealing and rework. Frequently the reason a good system underperforms.
  3. Panel replacement or subpanel. Not optional once circuit count exceeds capacity.
  4. Service upgrade. Involves the utility as well as the electrician, and runs on their schedule.

Items ten through thirteen are all work behind walls or inside the service equipment. In every U.S. jurisdiction that is licensed trade work with a permit and an inspection. There is no version of this list where a homeowner opens a service panel.

Choosing where to start

The order above is by commitment, not by priority. Priority depends on your house. Two rules hold almost everywhere:

Beyond that, urgency wins. Equipment near the end of its life outranks equipment that still works, because failure removes your ability to choose.

Common questions

Which upgrade gives the fastest payback? It depends on your fuel prices, climate and equipment ages. Air sealing is the most consistently cheap, which is not the same as fastest.

Can I do items one to five myself? Air sealing, insulation and thermostat swaps are common homeowner work. Anything involving a circuit is not.

Do I need all thirteen? No. Most households do four or five over a decade, driven by equipment failures.

Is a portable induction hob a real test? It tells you whether you like induction cooking and whether your pans work. It tells you nothing about oven performance.
