Electrification mistakes that quietly add cost
The errors that make an electrification project cost more than it should, from skipped load calculations to climate assumptions that do not match your county.
Expensive electrification projects rarely go wrong at the moment of purchase. They go wrong earlier, in an assumption nobody wrote down, and the cost surfaces two winters later as a bill nobody predicted. The mistakes below are ordinary, cheap to avoid in advance, and awkward to fix afterwards.

Sizing from a rule of thumb
The oldest mistake is replacing equipment by matching the capacity of whatever was there before. The old unit may have been oversized when installed, and the house may have changed since. Oversizing produces short cycling, poor humidity control, more wear and a higher price; undersizing pushes the system onto backup resistance heat, which is the most expensive way to make heat in an electrified house.
A load calculation performed on site is the fix, and it takes hours rather than days. Ask for the output, not just the conclusion.
Assuming your climate is average
Households in different climates use energy very differently, and the gap is large enough to change which equipment makes sense. EIA analysis showing that homes in warmer states consume less site energy than homes in colder states is the summary version of a distribution that is wide at both ends.
The practical tool for pinning down your own position is degree days. The EIA explanation of heating and cooling degree days sets out how the measure works and why it is the standard way to compare weather-driven demand between places and between years. Two houses with identical equipment in different counties will not produce comparable bills, and normalizing by degree days is how you tell whether a change actually helped.
Doing things in the wrong order
Order matters more than most homeowners expect:
- Insulating after sizing the equipment means paying for capacity you no longer need.
- Adding circuits before the load calculation can mean redoing panel work.
- Replacing a water heater before deciding on space heating can waste a circuit.
- Finishing a basement before running conduit turns a cheap pull into a demolition job.
None of these are dramatic. They are all cases of a reversible decision made permanent too early.
Paperwork mistakes
Unpermitted work is the classic false economy. It saves a fee, then costs an inspection, a correction, and sometimes a sale. Beyond permits, three record failures are common:

Incentive assumptions
The last common error is budgeting around an incentive figure read somewhere generic. Federal, state and utility programs change eligibility, funding and paperwork requirements regularly, and they interact in ways that are specific to your address. Confirm the current terms with your own utility and state energy office, in writing, before you commit to a price that depends on them.

Common questions
Is a load calculation worth paying for separately? If a contractor will not include one, that is informative. Some homeowners pay an independent party for it before requesting quotes.
How much insulation should I do first? Enough that the load calculation reflects the finished house. Air sealing usually comes before added insulation.
Can I fix an oversized system with controls? Variable-capacity equipment tolerates oversizing better than single-stage equipment, but it is a mitigation, not a cure.
What should I do about unpermitted work already in the house? Ask your local building department how retroactive permitting works there. Rules differ, and guessing is worse than asking.
