Fitting an induction range: what the job involves
From gas cap-off to circuit run to cabinet clearance, the sequence and trades involved in replacing a gas or electric cooker with induction.
Swapping a cooker sounds like a delivery. Replacing gas with induction is a small construction project involving two trades, a permit in most places, and a cabinet that was built for a different appliance. This article walks the sequence so you can tell whether a quote has accounted for the whole job.

The sequence
- Survey. Measure the opening, check the cabinet depth, locate the panel and plan the circuit route.
- Disconnect and cap the gas. Performed by a licensed plumber or gas fitter, then pressure tested and inspected where required.
- Run the circuit. From the panel to the appliance location, with a receptacle or junction box as the appliance requires.
- Panel work if needed. A new breaker, or a panel change where no space or capacity exists.
- Cabinet modification. Cutout adjustments, filler strips, and often a countertop cut for a built-in hob.
- Set and connect the appliance. Anti-tip bracket, levelling, connection to the installation instructions.
- Inspection. Electrical, and gas where the line was altered.
Steps two, three and four are licensed trade work in every U.S. jurisdiction. A homeowner does not cap a gas line or land a conductor in a panel, whatever a video suggests.
Where the surprises live
The circuit run is the unpredictable step. Getting a conductor from the panel to a kitchen in a finished house means finding a path through whatever the building is made of, and none of that is visible during a survey. Kitchens are also the most finished rooms in most houses, so the cost of opening and repairing a wall is higher than elsewhere.
The second surprise is panel capacity. Adding an appliance load to a panel with no free spaces, or to a service already near its calculated limit, converts a cooker swap into an electrical project. A load calculation answers this before you order anything, and it is the cheapest question you can ask.
Cabinet and countertop reality
Old and new appliances rarely share dimensions. Common issues include a cutout an inch too narrow, a countertop overhang that fouls the control panel, insufficient depth behind for the connection, and clearance requirements below a hob that an existing drawer violates.
Read the installation manual, not the brochure dimensions, and give it to whoever is doing the cabinetry. Manufacturer clearance requirements are generally enforceable, and an installer who ignores them creates a problem at inspection.

Common questions
Can I install a freestanding induction range myself? Not the circuit or the gas cap. Positioning and connecting to an existing suitable receptacle may be within homeowner scope; confirm locally.
Do I need to remove the gas line entirely? Capping is usually sufficient. Full removal is a separate decision with its own cost.
How long does the job take? A day where the circuit is straightforward, longer where routing or panel work is involved.
Will my countertop survive the swap? Sometimes. Built-in hobs almost always need a new cutout, and stone cutting is specialist work.
